Changing the name servers of a domain

What name servers are, when to change them and how to point a domain to our hosting.

Name servers are the servers that tell the rest of the internet about your domain — where its website is and where mail should go. If the domain should run on our hosting and you want to manage DNS records in the portal, it has to point to our name servers.

How to find out where the domain runs

Open the domain in the client portal. Under Name servers you will see one of two messages:

  • The domain runs on our name servers — you manage DNS records in the portal.
  • The domain runs on foreign name servers — DNS records are set with whoever operates them.

Changing name servers

  1. Under Name servers, click edit.
  2. Enter the name servers, one per line, eight at most.
  3. Save.

The change spreads across the internet only after several hours. During that time some visitors may still reach the original location.

Moving a domain to us without downtime

  1. First prepare the website, mailboxes and DNS records with us the way they should look after the move.
  2. Only then change the name servers.
  3. Do not cancel the original hosting straight away — keep it running for at least two days until the change has spread everywhere.

If the domain is registered with another registrar and name servers are changed there, write to us — we will tell you exactly what to enter, or transfer the domain to us.
